I just love the project for this week, the Books for Baby Quilt.   This  project uses paper piecing and a chance to use scrap fabrics to make the little book covers.     Jennifer from Ellison Lane Quilts is sharing her quilt today and her finished project is so cute!

This project is one of the larger in the book so the prize this week is a big one too.  Our linkup prize this week includes (1) twin size Legacy by Pellon Natural Cotton batting, a $50 gift certificate to Form&Fabric and a welcome pack from Spoonflower that includes a $35 shop credit, the book “Field Guide to Fabric Design” by Kim Kight and a swatch book with samples of all fabric and materials Spoonflower uses for printing.

SO thankful for the generosity of the sponsors!

We’re moving out of the kitchen and on to a project for the kiddos this week with the Yum Yum Apple Bib.    And a bonus, you have no where to head to today because it’s my stop on the sew along! 🙂   I didn’t want to get confusing with too many posts, so everything is included below.  Sorry for the looong post!

The prize for this week’s project includes (1) package Pellon® 805R Wonder-Under®, a $25 GC to Form&Fabric, and a $30 GC to Stash Modern.

Phew, let’s get to the bib!

I don’t have any babies living at my house these days but I still really enjoyed making the Yum Yum Apple Bib.

It’s quirky, adorable and functional and truly looks like something you’d buy at a boutique shop!   I can’t wait until my nephew is big enough to wear it.

On mine I decided to increase the absorbency by adding a layer of batting in the middle.    When my kids were little they soaked through thin bibs and ended up with wet clothes so I think the extra layer helps.   I went ahead and appliquéd my seeds before sandwiching with the backing so that the stitching did not show on the reverse.

(This picture is after making the sandwich and cutting out my apple shape.)

I also used Vinyl Fuse on the backing fabric so that nothing could leak through.    (I have seen some struggles with using the Vinyl Fuse, but I  absolutely love it.  You really have to be patient and iron well to make sure the fuse is secure.)

The project goes together quite fast with the most time spent on the binding.   The bib is finished with bias binding and if you are new to using it, make sure not to pull too tight as you go around the curves.   It’s okay for the binding to appear ruffled as you’re sewing.  This is making room for it to ease over the curves and fit snugly.

I love the details in a project and the seeds and leaf are the icing on the cake!   I decided mine needed a stem too. 🙂

If you don’t have a need for a bib, this would be a cute potholder without the ties.  I think I see a red apple potholder in my future!

Have fun sewing this week and be sure to leave a comment on the post to enter my giveaway.

I have 5 sample packs of Aurifil thread, 1 mini fabric pack with sewing stickers from Form&Fabric and a Pellon interfacing/batting charm pack to offer.   I’ll choose 7 winners on Friday July 12th!

Toaster Cozy

I did a little altering to this week’s project for Patchwork Please, the Tea Cozy.

I love tea but I don’t own a teapot.  I boil water the boring way.

I do have a toaster though so I decided to make my toaster a happy home.

I love how it turned out!

TEA easily rearranged to EAT and I added a little toast applique in place of the teacup.

I tried to paper piece the toast but that was a disaster.   There were a gazillion pieces to make the curved portion of the toast and they measured like 1/8″.

Paper pieced toast or sanity??

I added in about 4″ to the width of the front and back pieces and boxed in the corners to make a cozy fit.

I used the same template for rounding the pieces that’s in the book but just added my width to the center.

With the curved top and the boxed corners, it looks a lot like a little house!

The inside could be a lot prettier but I was on a roll and not thinking ahead.  I should have finished my seam before boxing the corners.

I figure no one will see it, so I’m not worried about it.

I’ve loved seeing what everyone has linked up so far.    When using a craft book I think it’s important to keep an open mind so that you can allow yourself to be creative.

If the project doesn’t work exactly as is, do some tinkering and make it work for you!

I created a PDF of the toast applique in case anyone wanted to use it.    I used the same technique we used last week in making the applique dishtowels.

Toast Applique

Zakka 2.0 :: Patchwork, Please

So excited to finally share about this ‘officially’!  I know many of you have been involved in the buzz on flickr.

I am thrilled that we are doing another round of the Zakka Along.    Last year was a success as we stitched through the book Zakka Style and many of you wanted to do it again.

We’re doing it again, yay!

This year we will be stitching through Ayumi Takahashi’s new release, Patchwork Please.

This book is ADORABLE.    If you follow along with Ayumi’s blog Pink Penguin, then you know what a unique and whimsical sense of style she has.

Her book directly reflects that in every way.   The projects are delightful and her fabric choices are inspiring.

We are going to have a blast and I’m grateful to have Debbie from A Quilter’s Table as my partner in crime this year!

Ayumi helped to pull together 19 of her blogging friends to host the stops on the sew along.

Our contributors this year are:

We are set to start on Monday June 3rd and the sew along will continue for 19 weeks through each project in the book.

The book wasn’t set to release until April 9th, but it was released early and is shipping now.

Book Details:

We’re still ironing out a few details, so I will share more info as we get closer to the sew along.

Things will run very much like last year.    One of the weekly contributors will share their take on a project each Monday along with any tips or tricks they have to help you.

We will then work to sew up our project that week and will link up anytime between Monday and the following Sunday.    A winner will be announced the following  Monday along with the new weeks project.

I am floored at the response I have had from sponsors.  The list is growing each day for the prizes to be given away each week.

Here are some of the lovely businesses that have joined on, in no particular order.

If you haven’t joined in the flickr group, be sure to go and do that.  It’s a great place to ask questions and to meet new people!

You can also grab a button below to share the news of the sew along.

Over the next month I’ll share sourcing ideas for buying your supplies and more details on the sew along dates.

I also have a copy of Patchwork Please to giveaway!

Giveaway is closed, thank you to all who entered!  Winner announced here.

The book will ship directly from Interweave and is only open to US readers.  I’m sorry International readers 😦

Just leave a comment below and I’ll choose a winner on Friday, April 5th.
